Junkers
Ju-88 çok değişik yönlerde kullanılan çok yönlü bir Alman
savaş uçağıdır. Bombardıman, pike-bombardıman, yakın destek,
gece av ve foto-keşif uçağı olarak kullanılmıştır; göreve
bağlı olarak iki ila beş kişilik mürettebatı bulunmaktadır.
Hemen hemen 2. Dünya Savaşı’nın tamamında, 1939’dan
1945’e kadar görev almıştır. Mosquito ile birlikte bütün zamanların en çok yönlü savaş uçağıdır.
Metal
gövdeli uçaklar üzerinde deneyimli olan iki Amerikalı’nın
liderliğini yaptığı küçük bir grup tarafından
projelendirilmiş ve ilk uçuşunu 1936’nın Aralık ayında yapmıştır.
Birçok hız rekorlarına sahip olmuş ancak Ju-88A-1 olarak 1939
sonlarında Luftwaffe’de hizmete girene kadar büyük tasarım
revizyonlarına uğramıştır. Yüksüz olarak yaptığı 480 km/h
hız ile Alman bombardıman triosunun ( He-111,
Ju-88
ve Do-17)
en hızlı uçağıydı. Oldukça büyük bir bomba yükü vardı,
1790 kg bombayı gövde içinde ve kanatların gövdeye yakın kısımlarındaki
dört pilonda taşıyordu. Standart motoru 1.200hp gücünde iki
adet Jumo 211B’ydi. Üç ila dört kişilik mürettebat gövdenin
ön tarafında 360 derecelik görüş hakimiyeti ve üç adet
makinalı tüfek kullanma olanağı ile oturuyorlardı.
Bomba
yükü 2,500 ila 3,000 kg’a arttırılmış, daha geniş kanatlı
Ju-88A-4’ler büyük miktarlarda üretilmiştir. Ju-88’lerin bir
özelliği de ham ve yarı hazır pistleri kullanabilmesiydi. Özellikle
Rusya cephesinde büyük ana iniş takımları çamurlu pistleri
bile kullanmasına imkan veriyordu. Kanat altlarında pike frenleri
bulunmaktaydı ancak genellikle yüksek irtifadan veya çok alçak
irtifadan düz uçuş bombardıman görevlerinde bulunduğu için bu
frenler çok nadir kullanılmıştır.
Torpido
atışı, gece taarruz, eğitim ve özel maksatlar için değişik
modelleri üretilmiştir. Ju-88D serisi ise uzun menzilli keşif için
geliştirilmiştir. Sonuncu bombardıman ve keşif modeli olan
Ju-88S 1,700HP BMW 801G radyal, 1,810hp 801TJ veya 1,750hp Jumo 213E
motorları kullanıyordu.
Bütün
tiplerden toplam 10,774 adet üretilmiştir.

Junkers
Ju-88 was the most versatile German combat plane used in many roles.
It had a crew of two to five depending on the role and it was used
as a bomber, dive-bomber, close-support aircraft, night fighter and
reconnaissance aircraft. It was
in service almost during the entire WWII, from 1939 to 1945. With
the Mosquito the Ju-88
ranks as the most versatile combat machine of all times.
It
was originally designed by a small group led by two Americans who
were experienced in modern all-metal aircraft construction, and the
first prototype flew in December 1936. It gained speed records, but
the design had to be greatly altered before the Ju 88A-1 entered
service with the Luftwaffe in late 1939. It was the fastest of the
three German tactical bombers (
He-111,
Ju-88
and Do-17),
with a speed close to 480 km/h when unloaded. The bomb load was
large, 1,790 kg being carried in an internal bay and on four
inner-wing racks. The standard engines were two 1,200hp Jumo 211B's.
The crew of three or four sat close together in the forward fuselage
with perfect all-round view and disposal of the usual armament of
three hand-aimed machine guns.
Large
numbers were built of the Ju-88A-4 with longer wings to carry the
heavy loads, the bomb load being increased to 2,500 or 3,000 kg.
Ju-88 also operated from rough and semi-prepared soil airfields.
Especially on the Russian front, its big mainwheels helped to
take-off from the
fields with squashy surfaces. It also had dive brakes under the
wings which were seldomly used since most of the missions were level
bombings at high or very low altitudes.
Different
versions were produced for torpedo dropping, night attack, training
and various special duties. The Ju-88D series were designed for
long-range reconnaissance. The last of the bomber and reconnaissance
versions was the slim streamlined Ju- 88S which used the 1,700hp BMW
801G radials, or 1,810hp 801TJ or 1,750hp Jumo 213E.
Altogether
10,774 of all these versions were built.
