Hawker "Typhoon"               Fighter / Av

Hawker Havacılık’ın baş tasarımcısı, Hurricane’i projelendiren Sydney Camm daha 1937’de Hurricane’in yerini alacak uçak tasarımları üzerinde çalışmalara başladı. Bu uçak devasa, zamanının  en güçlü ve ağır tek kişilik ve tek motorlu savaş uçağı olacaktı.

1938 Ocak ayında, yani ilk Hurricane’den iki ay sonra Hawker Havacılık, o zamanlar geliştirme aşamasında olan 2000HP’lik Napier Sabre motorunu kullanacak, Hurricane’den %20 daha yüksek performanslı, kanatlarında 12 adet 0.303-in  Browning makinalısı olan yeni uçağın şartnamelerini aldı. Havacılık bakanlığı’na verilen teklifte alternatif olarak Rolls Royce Vulture da önerilmişti. 400 adet/MG olan mermi yükü de 500’e çıkmıştı.

Gloster tarafından üretilen 2,200 HP Sabre IIA motoruyla donatılmış Typhoon 1A 26 Mayıs 1941’de uçtu.

Tempest diye adlandırılan bir modeli de üretildi. Britanya Savaşı’nda görev almasına ilaveten Alman uçan bombaları V-1’lerin düşürülmesinde kullanıldı.

Hawker Aircraft’s chief designer Sydney Camm who designed the Hurricane started working on the designs of a replacement for Hurricane in 1937.  It would be a massive fighter, the heaviest and most powerful single-seat single-engined warplane designed and constructed at the time.

In January 1938, barely two months after the debut of the first production Hurricane , Hawker Aircraft received the specifications for a large single-seat fighter offering a performance at least 20 per cent higher than that of the Hurricane and achieving this with the aid of one of two 24-cylinder engines in the 2,000 h.p. class then under development --the Napier Sabre "H" type . Napier Sabre engine and housing twelve 0.303-in. Browning guns with 400 r.p.g. in its 16-meter long wings. At the proposal of the Air Ministry, Camm also prepared studies for an alternative version of his fighter powered by the Rolls-Royce Vulture engine, and increased the ammunition capacity of both machines to 500 r.p.g.

The first production Typhoon IA with the 2,200 h.p. Sabre IIA engine was completed by Gloster and flown on May 26, 1941.

A further version called Tempest was also produced. In addition to taking part in the Battle of Britain it was also used against the German flying bombs V1.
