It is the latest multi-national European project being made jointly with the participations of Great Britain, Italy, Germany and Spain. Eventhough France was one of the participants, she separated to develop a plane more suitable to her needs (Rafale). It is a two engine plane with canard wings and it is planned to perform 90% of the capabilities of F-22 but without stealth capabilities and it will cost 50% less.At the beginning it was planned as a plane to counter the threat of MiG-29 and Su-27 but after the collapse of the Soviet Union the project was converted to “out-of-area” operations similar to the Gulf War. The plane is equipped with the products of modern technology including MFD digital displays, fly-by-wire system and HUD. IT is planned to start deployment in 2002. RAF plans to buy 232, Germany 180, Italy 121 and Spain 87. Greece has also shown interest.
