P-59
USAAF’ın ilk jet motorlu uçağıdır. Siparişi 4 Eylül
1941’de verilmiş ve proje çok yüksek bir gizlilik içinde
yürütülmüştür. Bell tarafından yapılan uçağın
“I-A” motoru General Electric tarafından üretilmiştir.
İlk örnek 1942 yılının ortalarında tamamlanmış ve ilk
uçuş 1 Ekim 1942’de gerçekleşmiştir. 1943’de geliştirilmiş
I-14 ve I-16 motorları kullanan modellerinin seri imalatına
geçilmiştir.
Yalnız
66 adet P-59 üretilmiş ve performansı savaşa girecek
seviyede bulunmamıştır. Bu uçaklar USAAF personelinin eğitiminde
ve gelecekte yapılacak jetlerin geliştirilmesinde kullanılmıştır.

is the first jet propelled airplane of the USAAF. It was
ordered on September 4. 1941 and the project was conducted
under an utmost secrecy. Bell built the airplane and the I-A
engine was supplied by General Electric. The first sample was
completed in mid-1942 and its first flight took place in
October 1, 1942. In 1943 it was ordered for mass production
utilizing the improved I-14 and I-16 engines.
Only
66 P-59s were produced and its performance was never found
good enough and it never went into combat. They provided
training for the USAAF personnel and they were also used for
the design and development of
the forthcoming jet fighters.
