İki
kişilik F-94 ABD’nin her türlü hava şartlarında görev
yapabilen ilk önleme uçağıdır. ABD Kara Kuvvetleri Hava
Birlikleri’nin (USAAF) ilk jet avcı uçağı F-80’den geliştirilen
T-33 esas alınarak geliştirilmiştir. Gövde yeniden tasarlanmasına
rağmen T-33 kuyruk, kanat ve iniş takımları kullanılmıştır.
“Starfire” aynı zamanda ilk “afterburner”ı olan ilk seri
üretim jetidir. Bu olanak ona kısa süreler için ilave itiş gücü
sağlamıştır. Buruna yerleştirilmiş bir radarı bulunmaktadır ve
bu sayede düşman uçağını gece veya kötü hava koşullarında
tespit etme olanağına sahiptir. F-94’ler 1950’lerin başlarında
Hava Savunma Komutanlığı filolarında ABD’nin savunması için
görevlendirilmişlerdir. Daha sonraları Hava Milli Muhafızları
da bu uçaklarla teçhiz edilmişlerdir. Aralık 1949’dan başlamak
üzere Lockheed firması toplam 853 F-94 üretmiştir. Bunların
110’u F-94A ve 355’i F-94B’dir. F-94B ve ileri modellerde
24’ü gövde içinde 24’ü de 2 kanat podunda olmak üzere 48
adet “Mighty Mouse” roket bulunmaktadır.

The
two-place F-94 was the first operational jet all-weather interceptor
of USA. It was developed from T-33 “T-bird” which had been
developed from the US Army Air Forces' (USAAF) first operational jet
aircraft F-80. Although the F-94 had a redesigned fuselage, it used
the T-33 tail, wing, and landing gear. The Starfire was also the
first U.S. production jet to have an afterburner, which provided
brief periods of additional engine thrust. It was equipped with
radar in the nose to permit the observer in the rear seat to locate
an enemy aircraft at night or in poor weather. The pilot then flew
the Starfire into proper position for an attack based upon the
observer's radar indications. F-94s were primarily deployed for the
defense of the United States in the early 1950s, serving with Air
Defense Command squadrons. Many Air National Guard units were later
equipped with F-94s. Lockheed produced 853 F-94s for the Air Force,
beginning in December 1949. Of these, 110 were F-94As and 355 were
F-94Bs. F-94B and further models were equipped with 48 “Mighty
Mouse” rockets 24 of which located within the fuselage and 24 on
two wing pods.
