F-106 “Delta Dart”, önceki Convair F-102 “Delta Dagger”dan, o modeldeki sürat düşüklüğü gibi eksiklikleri gidermek için geliştirilmiştir. Başlangıçta F-102B olarak adlandırılmasına rağmen gövde yapısındaki köklü değişiklikler ve yeni bir jet motoru kullanılması nedeniyle F-106 olarak yeniden adlandırılmıştır. İlk F-106 uçuşu 26 Aralık 1956’da gerçekleştirilmiş, USAF’a teslimatlar 1959 Temmuz’unda başlamıştır. Üretim 1960 sonlarında sona erdiğinde 277 F-106A ve 63 F-106B imal edilmişti.

F-106 Hughes MA-1 elektronik yönlendirme ve atış kontrol sistemleri kullanmaktadır. Kalkıştan sonra uçağın kontrolu MA-1’e devredilebilmekte ve bu sayede uçuş ve uygun irtifada saldırı pozisyonuna geçirilmektedir. Daha sonra otomatik olarak “Genie” ve “Falcon” füzeleri ateşlenmekte, hücum pozisyonundan kaçış pozisyonuna geçmekte ve üssün yakınlarına kadar gelmektedir. İniş için ise pilot kontrolları almaktadır.

The F-106 “Delta Dart” all-weather interceptor was developed from the previous Convair F-102 "Delta Dagger" in order to overcome its deficiencies such as low speed. Originally designated the F-102B, it was redesignated F-106 because it had extensive structural changes and a more powerful engine. The first F-106A flew on Dec. 26, 1956, and deliveries to the USAF began in July 1959. Production ended in late 1960 after 277 F-106As and 63 F-106Bs had been built.

The F-106 uses a Hughes MA-1 electronic guidance and fire control system. After takeoff, the MA-1 can be given control of the aircraft to fly it to the proper altitude and attack position. Then it can automatically fire the “Genie” and “Falcon” missiles, break off the attack run, and return the aircraft to the vicinity of its base. The pilot takes control again for the landing.
