ABD Donanması’nın Kore savaşı’ndaki deneyimleri uzun menzilli, yüksek subsonik hızlarda ağaçların tepesine yakın uçabilen, radar ağını delip küçük hedefleri dahi her türlü hava şartlarında vurabilen uçak ihtiyacını ortaya çıkardı. Bunun cevabı Grumman A-6 “Intruder” oldu.

Yanyana oturan (pilot ve navigatör/bombacı) iki kişilik A-6 iki motorluydu ve bu özellik daha üstün performans ve pilotlara daha fazla güvenilirlilik veriyordu.

İlk A-6 serisi (A-6A) donanmaya (USN) 1963’de, Marinlere (USMC) 1964’de teslim edilmeye başlandı. İlk göreve giren grup VA-75 olup USS Independence uçak gemisinden Vietnam’daki Amerikan güçlerini desteklemeye başladı.

A-6’lar –6A’dan –6E’ye kadar değişik modellerde ve sofistike elektronik donanımla üretilmiştir. (LLLTV) Alçak Hafif İrtifa TV’si. İleri bana İnfrared( FLIR), lazer ile hedefleme ve hareketli hedefleri belirleme (MTI) mürettebata 10 milden daha hızlı giden her deniz hedefini tespit ve yok etme olanağı sağlıyordu.

Son A-6E “Intruder” 1997’de emekliye ayrılmıştır. EA-6B “Prowler”lar ise göreve devam etmektedir.

The Navy's experience in the Korean War showed the need for a new long-range strike aircraft with a high subsonic performance at tree-top height to permit under-the-radar penetration of enemy defenses and capable of finding and hitting small targets in any weather. The result was the Grumman A-6 "Intruder".

Manned by a pilot and bombardier/navigator seated side-by-side, the A-6 was designed to be powered by two engines which gave the "Intruder" far better reliability and performance than a single engine design and was heartily endorsed by flight crews because of the added margin of safety.

The first of the A-6 series (A-6A) were delivered to the Navy in 1963 and to the Marines in 1964. The first operational squadron to receive the A-6As was VA-75 that began its support of US forces in Vietnam flying initially from USS Independence.

 As the A-6 aircraft were produced from the -6A through the -6E, developments in sophisticated electronics and delivery hardware were incorporated that included Low Light Level TV (LLLTV), Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR), targeting with laser beam, and Moving Target Identification (MTI) which enabled the crew to detect and destroy land or sea targets moving at a speed greater than 10 mph.
